Jeanna Penn
I describe my work as mixed media narrative collage. My aim is to tell stories that are historical and/or personal in nature by using recontextualized sourced imagery and material culture. It is important to me to access the rich archive available and activate it into the larger dialogue. My work is an abstract telling of reclaimed narratives of the African diaspora around race, gender and unresolved legacies. The Black experience as subject is key as we hold conversations about representation and reconciliation. It is important to me to develop a body of work that speaks to the history and now of Black people, particularly as this nation is forced to confront its own identity. The hues and gradients of the watercolor, acrylic paint and ink infuse the collages with a feeling of nostalgia evoking a sense of connection and reflection for the viewer.
